Home Performance Advisor Certification

A 3-day, classroom-based, in-depth technical training course on whole of house performance to underpin your provision of independent advice to home owners, landlords, property managers and tenants.

Description

The Home Performance Advisor Certification course provides you with the technical knowledge and skills to offer households detailed advice that is independent of products and sales.   Once certified, you will be able to assess a home, understand the whānau's needs, and support their journey towards a warmer, drier, healthier and more efficient home.

This is a three-day classroom based course. The assessments are two assignments and one exam.  To pass, trainees must attend all days, submit course work to the deadline, and pass each component to the required certification mark (this will be a overall mark).  Course certification takes approximately six weeks from the date of the course.

Upon passing this course, we invite you to carry our kaupapa into your work.  Your certification lasts for 3 years and home performance advisors must meet on-going professional development requirements to maintain their certification. This includes attendance at related conference, seminars and webinars.  We expect that certified home performance advisors will remain active in the field carrying out regular home assessments.   See the ongoing professional development page for more information.

Course content covers the following topics:

  • Core principles of giving home performance advice
  • The typologies and characteristics of New Zealand houses
  • Heat gains and losses, and the ‘heat balance’ of homes
  • Internal moisture, ventilation and indoor environmental quality
  • The thermal envelope, orientation and insulation
  • Home heating/cooling; decision-making over home heating choices
  • Lighting and appliances
  • Hot water

Prerequisites

Registration for this course has these requirements:

  • You must have passed Principles of Home Performance course 
  • The organisation you work for has a Health & Safety policy, compliant with all laws and regulations, which also takes into consideration personal safety of advisors during home visits and you will comply with these policies.

COVID-19

HPA promotes best practice based on robust science for homes.  Applying this principle to Covid-19, we note best practice includes:

  • staying home if you are unwell or a household contact (contact us ASAP);
  • being fully vaccinated;
  • practising good hand hygiene; and
  • wearing a well fitting mask (N95) when inside.

We acknowledge our trainers can’t teach effectively in masks, they will do all they can to remain physically distant.  HPA encourages you to take care of yourself and others during our training.

Registration Fee

Please note the following:

  1. If the organisation funding your training requires a Purchase Order (PO) number, PLEASE organise this.   We appreciate your including the PO as part of your registration, or send ASAP.
  2. The course fee includes course materials and catering (lunch and breaks). Note, the course no longer includes accommodation, breakfast or evening meals.  If accommodation is required, this is the responsibility of all participants to organise and pay for themselves. We are trialing this on the basis of feedback from participants.
  3. Organisations with charitable status or those that operate as not-for-profit are eligible for a discounted registration fee. Please tick the relevant box and add your charity number to access this discount.
